Leather Painting

Welcome back!

Here is a new venture into the world of leather.

I have wanted to try painting on leather for quite a while and began putting aside some shoes and handbags for that purpose.

My problem was gathering information about preparing the leather and the types of paint or markers to use.

Painted handbag-1

This bag is my first piece and was drawn freehand . I prepped the leather with nail polish remover to remove dirt and I would guess allow paint to adhere to the surface. I used a combination of Liquitex acrylic paints, Decoart paint pens, Krylon metallic gold and silver pens, and Sharpie colored pens. Painted handbag 2-1

I also experimented with colored acrylic pearlized inks. I finished it with 2 coats of krylon crystal clear spray to seal it.

This is my psyscadelic handbag!

Does anyone have some more hints or suggestions for painting on leather?

I did not use any Jacquard paints or pearl-ex powders—-hmmmm…
